What Sade Sati is
Sade Sati (“seven and a half”) is the time Saturn takes to pass through three signs: the one before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the one after. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so the whole passage lasts about seven and a half years, and it returns roughly every thirty.
The three phases
- Rising: Saturn in the sign before your Moon.
- Peak: Saturn over your Moon sign.
- Setting: Saturn in the sign after your Moon.
A dhaiya (small panoti) is a shorter, two-and-a-half-year passage of Saturn through the 4th or the 8th sign from your Moon.
Sade Sati is often feared, but classical texts describe it as a time of effort, responsibility and maturing as much as of difficulty, and how it is felt differs greatly from chart to chart. The dates here are calculated from your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri), as in Vedic astrology.
